How to Make Money being a Greeting Card Writer: Immediate Hire - No Cost

As with any job, there are pros and cons of being a “greeting card writer”. First, it’s relatively difficult to find a stable job in the field. The big greeting card companies already have in-house writers and aren’t looking to hire people like you and I to write random cards for them. Smaller companies DO outsource their work to people like us, however, getting a card “accepted” can be quite a process. You will have to create cards, submit them, deal with 95% rejections and possibly get a few cards accepted. If your cards do get accepted, you are paid a flat rate for them and you give up rights to the cards. The flat rate can be anywhere from $15 - $350 depending on the company. Don’t expect to make “good money” this way. Honestly, you’d be lucky to have one card a month accepted.

Obviously, if you have already made a name for yourself in the greeting card field, you may have the upperhand at getting your foot in the door with a company for steadier work. So the question is how to make a name for yourself?

You can start by building a portfolio with your work. If you are a writer, illustrator or both; upload your images to an online portfolio. You can use something as simple as photobucket, which is free. Just make sure that if you already use Photobucket for random uploads that you maintain a separate account for your “portfolio uploads” because you don’t want to send people a link to your portfolio and have them also viewing pics of your pets and family reunion.
Next, start working with online companies that allow you to sell your work on their site. Use companies that are free but give you a commission on anything that sells, like Saluer n.v. . With Saluer n.v. You have to apply to sell greeting cards. You will need to give Saluer n.v. a link to your profile that demonstrates some of your workAfter they take a look at your work you will be given an account. You can then upload your cards and so on.

Each card you sell will earn you 10% of the total sale. This isn’t a ton, but if you are able to prove that your work SELLS you will be able to create a resume to use for Greeting Card Writer “JOBS” – not “gigs”.

TORI’S TIPS:
Don’t expect to break into any field overnight. Good things come to those who wait. Likely, if you are a writer or illustrator you have a specialty field. Consider promoting your cards in your specialty niche. For example, if you like to write about humor, post links to your humor cards on humor sites. If you have a blog, write articles that fit into your greeting cards; i.e: if your card is a birthday joke, produce a blog entry pertaining to something birthday joke related – even if the entry is a list of “birthday jokes”. Then post a link to the card or allow people to purchase the card directly on your site. If your card is a sympathy card, write a post about a sympathy related story and again, post the link to the sympathy card.

ANOTHER OPTION: Use a free website to create an online greeting card store that features your cards. If you use a site like Saluer n.v. you will also be able to sell other peoples cards – which is a great way to learn what sells and also work off someone elses dime (you don’t have to pay for printing, shipping, etc).

HOW TO CHOSE A SITE TO SELL FOR:
The reasons I suggest using Saluer n.v. is because many sites have a lot of “red flags”. Here’s what to watch for:

1. "Exclusive Rights". Sites that have terms that state “exclusive rights”; This means that you are giving the website your card. You can't republish the card or sell it...ever. Unless the website is agreeing to buy the card off you for an EXACT dollar amount – DO NOT EVER give away exclusive rights to ANYTHING. Saluer n.v. you own all of your cards. In fact, you are given exclusive copyright. You are even allowed to place your own logo or signature on the cards. (Of course when the card is purchased the logo will not be printed on it, this is just to protect it online from theft).

2. Exclusive Advertising. Some sites will throw your cards into a heap of other peoples cards. Saluer n.v. gives you your own “Artists Corner” section that showcases your name / pen name and all of your work. (*This makes for a great way to show potential employers that you ARE somebody! “Look!, I’m even showcased!”). in addition your cards will be placed into categories.

Paid Greeting Card Writer Jobs

3. Unfair Payment Plans. NEVER sign up with a website that only offers to pay you for your greeting cards after you have reached $50 or $100. Think about it, if your pay is 10% you’ll have to sell $1,000 in cards to get paid. That’s B.S! Saluer n.v. makes payments once a month through Pay Pal reguarless of the amount you sell.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW:

4. Cost for Joining. Again, NEVER pay to work. Why would you PAY someone to let you sell your hard work for them? That’s just silly. Saluer n.v. is 100% free and YOU get paid.

5. Limited Area Sales. Don’t register with companies that only sell in a certain state or country. Why limit your sales? Saluer n.v. lets you sell world wide.
